Video Transcript

Stephen
Hello everybody. I want to welcome you to another Corden Connect video article. My name is Stephen Houldsworth, VP of Global Platform Management and Marketing. This is the second in our series of interviews introducing our newly acquired drug product manufacturing sites, and today we are going to focus on our CordenPharma Lisbon facility. With that introduction I’d like to welcome Martin Walde, Managing Director of CordenPharma Lisbon. Hello Martin!

Martin
Hello Stephen! Thank you for having me.
Stephen
My pleasure. Perhaps we can start today with an introduction about you, your background and how you came to be the Managing Director of CordenPharma Lisbon.
Martin
Yes, sure. From an educational background, I’m a chemist. I started off my career in the pharmaceutical industry in Basel (CH). I worked then in different industries like in petro-chemicals and the printing ink industry. I also made a Master of Advanced Study at the ETH Zurich in Management Technology and Economics. I joined in 2018 the Vifor Pharma group as Site Head in Basel, and worked there for two and a half years. Since 2021, I’m the Site Head here in Lisbon and now just recently joined CordenPharma.
Stephen
So maybe you can give the audience today a little bit of history about the Lisbon site, when it started and various name changes that it’s gone through.
Martin
Yes, sure. The site here in Lisbon was originally founded by the company OM Pharma as a sales office in 1954. But then in 2002, the first facility was constructed here to produce drug products for OM Pharma itself. In 2009, OM Pharma was then acquired by the Vifor Pharma group. In 2018 we had the pleasure to inaugurate here the second facility, so we have two drug product production facilities here. And now in 2022, we joined CordenPharma.
Stephen
So, you know, during that introduction you mentioned that you are a drug product manufacturer. Perhaps you can give our audience a little bit more detail around the various dosage forms that you have at the site.

Martin
Yes. Here we are able to produce sachets. We are able to produce also tablets and capsules, which we can then pack in blisters and bottles. Concerning the blister, we have the capabilities to pack in PVC-aluminum or aluminum-aluminum. Furthermore, we are also producing here semi-solids, so ointments, which we pack in aluminum tubes. And we can also produce liquids, which we can pack in plastic and glass bottles. Everything is non-sterile.
Stephen
Thank you, and maybe finally just to wrap-up the interview today, you can give the audience some interesting tid-bits or facts about the Lisbon facility that you feel sets you apart as a manufacturing site.
Martin
Yes, thank you. So for years now it’s been very important for us to reduce our environmental impact. So for our operations, we invested in various steps into photovoltaic electricity production plates, which we have installed on the rooftop of our facility. So, we are now able to produce during 33 days out of the year our energy, which we consume here at the site. Furthermore, we also always try to reduce our waste water which we send to the sewers, and we are now able to recycle almost all waste water which we are producing here in-house. And furthermore we are also ISO-1401 certified, so we are working continuously to reduce our impact on the environment by reducing the waste which we are producing and the energy that we are consuming, and so then our CO₂ emissions as well.
Stephen
Excellent, you know those sustainability aspects are very important to our customers, so I’m sure they’ll be interested by that information. Thank you Martin for your time today. It’s been very interesting to learn about the Lisbon site and we look forward to hearing more from you guys in the future.
Martin
Okay! Thank you very much for having me.
